Tech Tip Tuesday: Buttonology 101 of the AV-30
In this video (below), we provide an overview of the Buttonology of the AV-30 to configure for flight.
There are three buttons on the AV-30 unit:
- Left button
- Center button (PUSH-SET)
- Right button (HLD BRT)
LEFT BUTTON OVERVIEW
Starting with the Left Button, it controls the MENU. The three sub-menus are: 1) Edit Fields, Select Fields, 2) Setup, and 3) Install.
Beginning with the EDIT FIELDS SEL FIELD, this is a pilot settable menu from inner circle to outer circle. By pressing the left button 1X, you enter EDIT FIELDS SEL FIELD and you will see a black box appear at the top. Rotating the center knob, you can select which “field” you would like to change.
When you have decided which field to change, you press the center button 1X, use the center knob to rotate and select what you wish to display (e.g., SET ALT, GPS GS, GLOAD), and then press the left button 1X to select DONE.
Moving onto the SETUP menu. Press the left button 2X to enter SETUP. Using the center knob, you will rotate to select. Once you have decided on what to select, you press the center knob 1X. The following are the sub-menus in the order they appear as you rotate the center knob, as well as their options:
- UI STYLE: Legacy, EFIS, Vintage
- UI FONT: Arial, LCD
- COURSE DEV*: Enabled, Disabled (*only available if you have AV-HSI)
- GLIDESLOPE: Enabled, Disabled
- AUDIO VOL: 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest)
- AOA ALERT: Enabled, Disabled
- AOA HIGH LIM
- AOA LOT LIM
- G ALERT: Enabled, Disabled
- G POS LIMIT
- G NEG LIMIT
- ROLL ALERT: Enabled, Disabled
- ROLL LIM
- TRAK STAB: Enabled, Disabled
- HOURS: The time that the AV-30 unit has been running
This demonstration video does not go over the INSTALL menu, as that is more advanced.
Next, moving onto the different pages on the AV-30 unit. The indicator of what page you are on is at the bottom right corner of the AV-30 screen.
If you don't have a transponder connected, then it's going to look like a decluttered attitude indicator. The pages are:
- 1:3
- 2:3
- 3:3
- AI (Transponder Control Page or Decluttered Attitude Indicator)
A thing to note about these pages is that you can customize what to display on each of those pages. The recommendation we make to users is to make the first page for one for takeoff, the second page for cruise, and the third page for landing. Customize those pages to your liking.
CENTER (PUSH-SET) BUTTON OVERVIEW
Moving onto the center button, or the “PUSH-SET” menu. The main thing you need to note about the center button is that if you press it 1X, you can set the BARO, by rotating the center knob. If you want to go to the standard 29.92, just press the left button 1X. If you want to recall, you can also recall the one that you've set.
If you press the center knob 2X, you will be able to adjust the HDG BUG, by using the center knob to rotate to select. And if you adjust it so that you can't see it and you want to know you want it to be at the line of flight, if you're displaying heading bug, you can press and hold the center button, and the heading bug will come back to center.
If you press the center knob 3X, you will be able to adjust its OBS, by using the center knob to rotate to select. That is going to communicate with my other instruments. If you're connected to an AV-HSI, if you don't have an AVHSI, that's not going to change anything and you won't have that option.
If you press the center knob 4X, we can select our source selection. You can select VLOC or GPS. With GPS selected you can get a vertical glide slope, but if you have a VLOC, you will not have that displayed. Additionally, with GPS selected, your vertical trend information will be gone.
If you press the center knob 5X, you will be able to make a DJ ADJ (Adjust Gyro). Once its power cycled, it will go back to your AV-MAG information.
Lastly, if you press the center knob 6X, you will be able to add/adjust a SQUAWK code. There isn't an IDENT button, so you would have to go to the AI page to IDENT, if need be.
AI (TRANSPONDER) PAGE OVERVIEW
Reviewing what is displayed on the AI page from the bottom left to the right in a circular motion, you will see:
- IDENT
- PALT (Pressure Altitude)
- NIC (7-10, need GPS)
- SQWK
- N # (whatever is configured in the tail)
- MODE
- NACp (8-10, need GPS)
- STAT (if it says maintenance, it may be that it is not configured properly.
Moving on, if you press the center button 1X, you can enter the SQUAWK code.
You can adjust the SQUAWK code by turning the center knob and then pressing the center know 1X to make the selection, and the cursor will automatically move to the next digit for selection.
If you need to change the MODE, you press the center button 1X, press and hold the right button to switch back to VFR. Then press the left button 1X to select DONE.
If you wish to change your flight ID, press the center button 1X and it will bring up the SQUAWK number. When that appears, go ahead and press and hold the center button until you see FLIGHT ID pop up. If you have an angel flight going, you can put your angel flight ID in here.
If you press the right button 1X it will select CLEAR so you can input another FLIGHT ID or you can press the left button to select DONE.
