In this video we show you how to set up and configure the AV-HSI and the GNS480.
GNS 480 with AV-HSI ARINC
In this video tutorial, uAvionix customer support will be providing detailed, visual and verbal instructions on how the AV-30 unit works with the CNX80 or GNS480, when connected using ERC429.
First, let’s enter ground test mode or ground maintenance mode. While it reboots, you can navigate to the AV-30. Navigate to the Installation menu of the AV-30 and rotate to select “AVHSI CRG” (AV-HSI Configuration). It is recommended to select common and low, because the low speeds acceptable. The low speed is a bit more resilient to cable interference.
If you refer to our AV-30 Installation manual, it will instruct you to select the Gamma429, there is no FP for that. Some of the newer versions of the GNS software actually have those graphics messages.
Prior to beginning this video, we were already wired up, per our installation manual. For the purpose of this video, we are using channel two, which is pin 8 and 28, EFIS mode low.
Moving back to the CNX80, navigate to test mode, or input mode, and you will see data streaming through, indicating that it is indeed receiving data.
Next, we will reboot and place in airborne mode, to show operating behavior. Please note that the self-test on the GNS 480 is quite advanced, more elaborate than like what the 430 does.
If you take a look at the AV-30 unit, you will note that it will start cycling through—full right, half right, centered, full left, dot left, send the CDI, switches nav sources for you back and forth. Also note there are two front flag flips, the indicator up and down, removes the nav valid, and then does a similar sweep of the vertical deviation indicator.
Once the CNX80 has finished booting, we will clear thing out. For the purpose of this demonstration video, I had a flight plan loaded. It is already populated right in there and it already has great satellite position. If it does not have a satellite position, it will display no data.
Next, to be able to see if your AV-30 unit is displaying AV-HSI data, there are a couple ways you can do this. The easiest way would be to navigate to the 1:3 display page of the AV-30 unit, change the BARO setting to match what is being displayed as the “correct Baro” setting in the CNX80 (in this vide, it was 30.02).
With no flight plan loaded, it will show an indication of no course. It will state “no active leg defined” and the AV-30 will display “No course.”
Once the leg is activated, you'll start getting guidance on both the AV-30 and the CNX80.
With the newer software, you can get this to depict holds. Notice the pattern of that procedure was drawn. You will be able to zoom in and out with the center knob in the AV-30 unit as desired.
