Tech Tip Tuesday: Configuring Wind Speed and Direction on Your AV-30 (Video Transcript)
In this video demonstration, we will show you how to configure and display wind speed and direction on your AV-30. The AV-30 calculates wind by comparing GPS ground speed and track with indicated airspeed and heading, so you will need to make sure that your system is properly connected and configured. To begin, you will need to confirm the following:
-
First, make sure you have an outside air temperature probe. One way to confirm that is to make sure that it's being displayed on the AV-30. In the video, we point to where the temperature is being displayed—it shows 37 degrees Fahrenheit. See screenshot below for reference:
-
Second, you will want to confirm that the GPS is connected. Press the left button 1X to go into the menu. A little black box will appear (see screenshot below) and you will want to make sure you have that box in the desired selected area. Using the center knob, rotate until you arrive to “GPS TRK” and then press the center knob 1X again. As long as you have a heading there and it agrees with your DG heading, you know that you have GPS connected.
- Third, you will need to make sure that you have AV-MAG connected. You will do so by pressing the left button 1X. Then pressing the middle knob. Then rotating that knob to locate the DG HDG. Then pressing the center button 1X and then selecting “DONE” by pressing the left button 1X. In this demonstration video, we show that we can be sure the AV-MAG is connected because the heading matched with the GPS track, because it’s our magnetic heading.
- NOTE: If you feel like something is not quite right, you can also go into the INSTALL MENU when you are on the ground and look at SERIAL 4, to confirm that it is in fact turned on and you do not have errors. To do this, you will hold the center knob, while powering on the aircraft. Then you will press the left button 3X, press the middle knob 1X, and then turn the middle knob to the right until you arrive to “SERIAL 4.” This is where you can confirm that it is ENABLED.
- Fourth, you will need to make sure that airspeed is indicating correctly. In this demonstration video, you will note that the airspeed shows 116 and the AV-30 shows an airspeed between 116-117, which is very close. One thing that you may want to do to make sure that it's indicating correctly, if it's off at all, especially if it's on the ground, indicating airspeed, you'll want to complete the Pitot Zero [Tech Tip Tuesday: How to Complete Pitot Zero].
- Fifth, once you have confirmed that you have everything, you can set up the wind on the unit that displays the OAT. If you have an AVHSI, then you can display it on both the AI and the DG. To display wind speed and direction on the AI, you will need to press the left button 1X and a small black box will appear—using the center knob, rotate the box to where you want to have it displayed and then press the center knob 1X. Then, using the center knob, you will rotate to “WIND COMP,” press the center knob 1X, and then press the left button 1X to select “DONE.” For clarification, the wind comp is going to tell us what our tailwind is and what our crosswind is.
- Finally, you will repeat this process for Wind Vector (WIND VECT). You will press the left button 1X, rotate the center knob to move the black box to select the area where you want the wind vect to display on the unit. Then, you will press the middle knob 1X. Then rotate the center knob to locate “WIND VECT,” press the center knob 1X, and then press the left button 1X to select “DONE.”
In this demonstration video, we pan over to the unit below, that is on the DG version. To change from the Attitude Indicator (AI) to the Directional Gyro (DG), you will press and hold the center knob. And then press the right button to change the page.
Once you are here, you will repeat the process that was given above. You will press the left button 1X, rotate the center knob to move the black box in order to select the area that you want the WIND COMP displayed, then press the center knob 1X. Then, using the center knob, you will rotate to “WIND COMP,” press the center knob 1X, and then press the left button 1X to select “DONE.” The nice thing about this, is that this is showing exactly where the wind is coming—in this demonstration video, the wind is coming from the south and 14 knots that it’s coming. And lastly, having the wind speed and direction will display an arrow on the heading row.
We hope that this demonstration video was helpful to you. And if you don't have an AV-MAG, I highly recommend getting it. If you don't have it connected to a GPS, I highly recommend that. As well as the OAT probe. A last note, the AV-MAG can be paralleled to multiple units, but the OAT probe cannot. But if you have an AV-HSI, it will share the OAT information amongst all the units.
