Key Autopilot Control Concepts
Trio Mode Definitions
On the Trio autopilot:
| Mode | Source |
|---|---|
| CRS | AV-30 heading/course commands/ForeFlight |
| TRK | GPS steering (GPSS) |
Simplified explanation for pilots:
- Course = AV-30/HDG/ForeFlight
- Track = GPS/GPSS
Adding panel labels near the selector may help pilots remember this.
AV-30 Autopilot Setup
Enable Autopilot Control
- On the AV-30 press Push-Set Menu.
- Scroll to Autopilot Mode.
- Set to HDG BUG.
This allows the AV-30 heading bug to control the autopilot’s lateral guidance.
Heading Control Operation
- Rotate the AV-30 heading bug using the push set menu knob on the DG or AI.
- The Trio autopilot heading selection will follow automatically.
- The aircraft will turn to follow the selected heading.
Quick Tip
Press and hold the center button (when displaying the HDG BUG) on the AV-30 to instantly slew the heading bug to the current aircraft heading.
Altitude Preselect Setup
The AV-30 provides altitude preselect.
Setup Steps
- On the AV-30 press the left menu button for "Edit Fields."
- Select a display field.
- Choose Set Altitude.
*This can be shown on both the AI or the DG.
This displays the selected altitude (SALT).
Operation
- Set the desired altitude using Set Altitude.
Set climb rate using Trio vertical speed. (This is set on the Trio)
- Engage the autopilot.
The aircraft will:
- climb or descend
- capture the selected altitude automatically.
If audio is connected, a chime will indicate altitude capture.
Autopilot Engagement
The autopilot should not be engaged below 500 ft AGL. (Placard with Trio)
Typical workflow:
- Takeoff manually.
- Climb above 500 ft AGL.
- Set:(good to set on the ground if approximate heading and altitude is known)
- Heading bug
- Vertical speed
- Selected altitude
- Engage autopilot:
- Top Left Button: Lateral control
- Top Right Button: Vertical control
Trim Considerations
The system does not provide automatic trim.
After altitude capture:
- Temporarily disable altitude hold.
- Trim the aircraft manually.
- Re-engage altitude hold.
This prevents excessive servo load or autopilot disconnects.
GPS Navigation Operation
Aircraft uses a GNX 375, which supports GPSS steering.
Important Result
Because the GPS supports GPSS:
The AV-30 should remain in Heading Bug mode.
The autopilot switching is done only on the Trio.
*Autopilot Unlock must be completed for this control
Switching to GPS Navigation
When cleared to proceed on course:
- Load or activate the flight plan on the GPS.
- On the Trio autopilot switch from:
Course → Track by clicking the bottom left button
The autopilot will then follow the GPS flight plan.
Summary
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| AV-30 | Leave in Heading Bug mode |
| Trio | Switch TRK→ Track to follow GPS |
ForeFlight Integration Setup
If using ForeFlight with an AV-Link:
Enable Wireless GPS
- On the AV-30 press Left button twice.
- Enter Setup Menu.
- Find Wireless GPS.
- Change from Disabled → ForeFlight.
This allows the AV-30 to receive flight plans from ForeFlight.
Displaying ForeFlight Flight Plans
When ForeFlight is connected:
- Open the Traffic Display or the DG/HSI display on the AV-30.
- Press the Center Push Set Menu until you see SRC SEL.
- Select ForeFlight.
The flight plan will display along with traffic on the MFD display.
ForeFlight Autopilot Behavior
When flying a ForeFlight flight plan:
- The autopilot should remain in CRS mode
- The AV-30 provides the navigation guidance
Summary:
| Mode | Used For |
|---|---|
| Course | AV-30 / ForeFlight navigation |
| Track | GPS GPSS steering |
Additional Notes
- AV-Mag is required for this installation.
