Magnetometer vs. Compass
A magnetometer is a sensor that measures magnetic fields
- Any device that measures the direction of earth’s magnetic field is called a compass, including electronic ones.
- A Compass is subject to lead/lag or compass errors during turning and acceleration. It doesn’t require electrical power to operate. (ANDS) (UNOS) (Northern Hemisphere)
- A Magnetometer can be a compass and can compensate for lead/lag, acceleration/deceleration. It requires electrical power to operate. It is mounted away from interference and information is sent to the DG in the cockpit.
Overview
- The AV-Mag is a 3-axis electronic compass. It can precisely measure the earth’s magnetic field and aid the AV-30-C gyroscopic heading measurement, improving long-term accuracy.
- The AV-Mag improves accuracy of the gyroscopic direction indication of the AV-30-C. It is not a certified replacement for a required wet or dry compass.
- For the AV-Mag to be effective, the installation and calibration must be done with accuracy and precision.
System Function:
- The AV-Mag, when paired with an AV-30-C, can provide consistent and accurate heading. The AV-Mag is an aiding device and does not provide full slaving to the AV-30-C.
