Yes. While the pilot can use skyAlert to receive audible alerts when an aircraft comes within a defined range and altitude of the UAS operation, UAS technicians and visual observers can leverage that same skyAlert device to visually gain airspace situational awareness. This is done via GDL 90 EFB connectivity, for example, with foreflight. See this video for
skyAlert – GDL 90 EFB Connectivity with ForeFlight
With the following instructions and video below, we demonstrate how to pair your Sky Alert with a GDL90 enabled electronic flight bag such as Foreflight.
Sky Alert is a rugged, wearable ADSB detection and alerting system that enhances airspace awareness for UAS pilots operating in the field.
Sky Alert comes with a RAM universal belt and visor clip for convenient wearable use. Sky Alert is designed for UAS operations. The pilot wears Sky Alert, which sounds an alarm when an aircraft enters a preset range and altitude. This means the pilot doesn't have to keep watching a screen to stay aware of nearby traffic. They can stay focused on flying.
At the same time, a visual observer or UAS technician can use the pilot's sky alert to display that same traffic in ForeFlight, adding another layer of situational awareness and safety by detecting cooperative aircraft broadcasting ADSB on both 978 and 1090 MHz frequencies. Sky Alert provides real-time visibility of aircraft around you, from small helicopters to large airliners.
First, start by holding down the front button to power on the Sky Alert. Once powered on, connect to its Wi-Fi network using an iPad or similar device. Open your Wi-Fi settings and look for the network named Sky Alert. Connect to it. Once connected, open your GDL90 enabled electronic flight bag.
For instructional purposes, we will be using ForeFlight as the device for reference. When we open ForeFlight and view our local map, we can see ADSB traffic being detected by our Sky Alert and displayed in real time within the app.
If you tap on the arrow representing the traffic, you can see more details such as elevation, distance from your location, heading, speed, and the type of ADSB out.
If you don’t see expected traffic, check your app's device or IO section to see if Sky Alert is both detected and connected. You can also check if the traffic layer is enabled in ForeFlight. This can be found on the map tab.
And that's all you need to know about using your Sky Alert with a GDL 90 enabled EFB. Safe flying!
