I Have the GRT SafeFly2020 and echoUAT combo with a GRT EFIS and my PAPR
has lots of errors.
Why can I no longer find the echoUAT Wi-Fi when doing a Wi-Fi search?
Your echoUAT WI-Fi may have failed. If you can peek inside the echoUAT
through
the spaces around where the power plug goes in when the echoUAT is powered
on. You should not see a steady blue light. If you do then the Wi-Fi
has
failed.
Why am I not always seen by others when flying?
The ADS-B system is a ground based system. You may not be in range of
a ground
station. You may Google ADS-B Towers to bring up a map of where these
stations
are located.
Why do I see "ownship" as well as a ghost image of my aircraft close
behind?
The most likely cause is that your echoUAT is not in sync with your transponder.
The transponder transmits your squawk code on 1090 MHz, the tailBeacon
transmits
on 978 mhz. If the echoUAT does not “see” your transponder it may transmit
a code other than your transponder code, hence "2" aircraft are see.
Please
adjust the transponder threshold to so that the echoUAT shows the same
squawk
code that is on your transponder.
Why is my echoUAT constantly disconnecting from my iPad and Foreflight?
Your iPad may be switching to a Wi-Fi other that the echoUAT Wi-Fi. Please
be sure that any other devices, cellphones etc., have hotspots turned
off
and set the iPad Wi-Fi to "ask for permission" to join a network. If
this
does not help please contact our
customer support.
Why does my echoUAT no longer see my transponder?
The echoUAT requires a Mode C transponder in order to work. If you do
have
a Mode C transponder, please try adjusting the transponder threshold
My echoUAT has stopped working completely. How do I get it repaired?
To be certain that your echoUAT is not working, please contact our
customer support.
If the echoUAT has indeed failed, we no longer offer repair/rework service
as it is a discontinued product, and you will need to find another solution
or a used echoUAT as we no longer sell echoUAT's and have none in stock.
Why does ATC see two squawk codes from my aircraft, one being the assigned squawk or 1200 and the other being something random?
The echoUAT and your transponder must be syncronized to each other in order to send the same squawk. The echoUAT will send for zeros when it does not "see" your transponder. Please try resetting the transponder threshold with your echoUAT app.
I understand that the echoUAT can be made to work with the F.U.N.K.E mode S transponders. How is this done?
Yes the F.U.N.K.E. can be locked as a Mode A/C transponder which will work with the echoUAT. You must program the ICAO in the transponder as "000000" It can be found on pages 16,17 and 44 in the F.U.N.K.E manual.
I was told that I could hardwire my MGL using the Sandia 165R transponder directly to the echoUAT so the echoUAT receives squawk and baro without the echoALT device. How may this be accomplished?
Yes, You can run a wire from pin 7 of the Sandia 165R to pin 4 of the echoUAT and ithe echoUAT will receive data directly.
How do I get to the menu to adjust the transponder threshold on my echoUAT?
When the echoUAT app is opened, it opens to the "Monitor" screen. Select the "configure" screen and in the upper left of the screen you will see "ECHO" inside a white box. Tap on it three time and you will then see "Basic" and "Advanced" you will find the threshold setting in Advanced.
What is the echoALT and why do I need one?
The echoALT device is a blind encoder. It is required by the FAA unless you are hard wired to your aircraft encoder. The echoALT provides altitude information when not in an area serviced by radar.
How do I order the echoALT device?
You may order the echoALT device on our website. Go to uAvionix.com, then select "support" on the top right of the page. Scroll down to "echoUAT" There you will find instructions for ordering the device. Note that you MUST have the echoUAT serial number. If not in your logs it may be found on the side of the echoUAT that is adjacent to the power connector (just around the corner) on a 1/4" metalic sticker.
How do I install and load the software for the echoALT device?
There are detailed instructions in the echoALT service bulletin which can be found on the uAvionix support page. Scroll down to the "echoUAT" then click on it and find the service bulletin on the left side of the page. There is also a six minute video on YouTube detailing the complete process in real time. Look for "uAvionix echoALT"
echoUAT Update for your echoALT Installation (Video Transcript)
You will not be using the echo app for this process and no changes to your configuration settings are necessary. The first step is to navigate to uavionix.com on your web browser. If you are on a smartphone, you will see a stack icon on the top right corner to open up a drop-down menu, to select the “Support” tab. If you are on a desktop or tablet, you will see the menu laid out at the top of the page, click on the “Support” tab.
Once you have opened up the manual, go ahead and turn to page 19, to section 9.4.2 titled “Connecting the echoALT Retrofit,” so that we may understand how to physically connect the ALT unit into the existing echo circuitry.
The ALT unit comes with a pre-wired harness and has three connectors on it. The connectors only fit into their designated place, which will make it difficult for any mistakes to be made. When proceeding with this process, the first thing you want to do is plug the ALT unit into the second center connector of that harness.
Then carefully remove the plug out of the echo. Next, plug one end of the harness into the echo and then, the plug that came out of the echo plug back into the harness (for a better visual demonstration, watch this video). This completes the installation of the physical installation of the echo.
Subsequently, we will now download two files. Navigate to the echoUAT service bulletin and note that there is a warning that you should not proceed with this installation unless you have the ALT physically wired in.
We will need to download 1) Protocol Software (called Device 1), and 2) Transceiver Software (called Device 2). Next, you will need to go into your network settings of the device you are using and connect to the Ping Wi-Fi. You'll want to open up a browser like Chrome or Safari and type in this IP address: 192.168.4.1. This put us directly into our echo. Click on the ADS-B version, the center one where it says update and we're going to choose a file.
Again, the protocol converter file was Device 1. That's the first one we're going to be loading. After this file loads, we're going to hit the advanced button that's underneath choose file and we're going to go to Device 2. We will then wait a moment for the device to restart.
Then, we are going to go to advanced device number 2. We're going to choose the file and Device 2 was the PING transceiver. Click “Update.” Once complete, the screen will read: Update successful, device 2 restarting. After it's restarted you may now shut down because your installation is complete.
My echoUAT will not accept the Device 2 software when updating for the ALT addition.
Please look at the face of your echoUAT.There are either 2 or 3 very small holes below the "C" in echoUAT about 1/4" from the bottom edge of the echoUAT, just above and slightly to the right of the antenna coax connector. If there are 3 holes the chipset it has cannot be field updated, it must be returned to manufacturing to be updated. Please contact uAvionix support for a RMA before sending the unit in.
Why does my echoUAT have a red flashing light?
The echoUAT flashes red once per second as it transmits ADS-B information. The echoUAT green light will flash randomly as it receives ADS-B information.
My echoUAT used to work with my Garmin 330 Mode S transponder, why has it stopped working?
A change in the FAA SSR programming (Secondary Surveilance Radar) has rendered the transponder monitor function ("sniffing") of the echoUAT inoperative. Without hardwiring the echoUAT with a MUX cable it will no longer work.
How may I order an echoUAT MUX cable? addition.
The echoUAT MUX cable is a discontinued product and can no longer be supplied.
I am told that the EchoUAT has been discontinued. Does uAvionix have a replacement?
There is no direct replacement for the EchoUAT that has both ADS-B in as well as out in a single unit. If your EchoUAT has lost ADS-B out but still receives ADS-B in, you can add a skyBeacon or tailBeacon for ADS-B out while retaining the EchoUAT for ADS-B in. The echoESX is the newest addition to our ADS-B line, it is a full 1090 ES transponder with ADS-B out and internal WAAS GPS, however it is ADS-B out only and requires a control head on the instrument panel such as an AV-20 or AV-30 EFIS.
My skyFXY GPS has failed, can it be replaced with the skyFXX-ext? addition.
Yes, the skyFYX-ext is a complete WAAS GPS unit with an integral GPS antenna all in a single unit. It only requires power and ground and its GPS output connected to pin six of the echoUAT.
Can the output of the skyFYX-ext be bifurcated for connection to the AV-30-C?
No, the skyFYX and skyFYX-ext may not be shared with the AV-30-C and it needs to be noted that the AV-30-C requires a GPS input from a GPS navigator, not raw GPS data such as the skyFYX and skyFYx-ext output.
I still have questions. Where do I go for customer support?
For additional customer support, please submit a Support Ticket to the uAvionix customer support team.
