Install Equipment Needed
The AV-Mag is designed to be easy to install and configure. The performance of the AV-Mag is dependent on the condition of the systems of the host aircraft. The AV-Mag will not meet the performance specification if the host aircraft systems are not in good working order.
- Camp Compass - What affects the magnetic compass will affect the magnetometer
- Non-magnetic screwdriver and wrench should be used for installation - Using a magnetic screwdriver may cause issues with the AV-Mag but it won’t ruin it. Other units are not that way.
- Brass fasteners
- Non-magnetic digital level
- Use new wiring - M27500 3 conductor 22AWG wire

Where to Mount the AV-Mag?
This is different aircraft to aircraft.
Considerations
- Existing wiring
- Lighting
- Motors
- Steel control cables
- Pitot Heat
- ELT
- Anything electronic, steel, or loose or coiled wiring
**Mount as close to the angles of the AV-30 in the panel as possible
*Up to 4 AV-30s can be connected to the AV-Mag.
*Parallel just the Brown (Pin 6) and Black (Pin 10) wires to the other AV-30s.
AV-Mag Orientation
Configuration of the AV-MAG
- Enter the install menu
-
Serial 4 - set to AV-Mag
- Once set you will have a MAGCAL flag
- If you have a NOMAG flag then something is not communicating. (troubleshooting)
-
Install menu steps to be completed
- interference check
- orientation
- angles
- Calibration to be completed
Calibration of the AV-Mag
- Compass Rose not needed
- Only need to know North
- Orient aircraft to North Press “Next”
- The AV-30 will give you a countdown of 30 degrees.
- Once 0 is shown then Click “Next”
- Continue this until all 12 points are completed.
- Once completed check all headings and make sure they are indicating correctly.
- If the heading is off the same amount at every point then you will need to rotate/shim the AV-30 more closely to the line of flight.
**EACH AV-30 must have the configuration, installation, and calibration completed.
Interference Check
The interference range indicates fluctuating magnetic fields which will negatively impact calculated magnetic heading values, so a good installation requires this range to be as small as possible. If the range is greater than 10%, attempts should be made to re-site the AV-Mag location or to mitigate interferers.
Possible Interference:
Lights:
- Landing
- Taxi
- Strobe
- Recognition
- All Lights
Avionics:
- Comm Radio
- GPS
- USB Charger
- iPad
- Tools in Baggage compartment
Controls:
- Aileron
- Rudder
- Elevator
- Flaps
Other:
- Landing Gear
- Speed Brakes
- Autopilot Engage
- Pitot Heat
- Air Conditioner
