Overview
If you already have an AV-30 with an AV-Link installed, you can use a pingUSB as the traffic source and see ADS-B traffic on the AV-30's traffic page. The AV-Link joins the pingUSB's Wi-Fi network and passes the traffic information to the AV-30.
There is one important difference between pingUSB and a receiver like Sentry or skySensor: pingUSB has no GPS. It is a traffic-only receiver. That means the AV-30 has to get its position from somewhere, either an RS-232 GPS signal or the GPS signal from a tailBeaconX. Without a valid GPS signal in, the AV-30 has no way to plot the location of traffic in relation to your ownship, and the traffic page will not display targets.
What you need
- AV-30 (certified or experimental) with current software
- AV-Link installed and updated
- pingUSB with a USB power source
- A GPS source, from any one of the following:
- A navigator wired to the AV-30 RS-232 input, or
- A tailBeaconX, or
- An AV-HSI wired to an appropriate navigator
For wiring pins, protocol selection, and the AV-30 configuration settings for each RS-232 wired navigator, see Compatible RS-232 GPS Sources. For AV-HSI wiring and configuration, see the AV-30 Install Manual, available in the AV-30-C Documentation.
Setup
- Power the pingUSB. Plug it into a USB power source and mount it with a clear view out the window. It broadcasts its own Wi-Fi network once powered.
- Assign the pingUSB to the AV-Link. Put your device in airplane mode, then turn Wi-Fi back on and connect to the AV-XXXX network. In Chrome or Safari, go to 192.168.5.1 and click Wi-Fi Settings at the bottom. Under ADS-B Receiver Settings, select the Ping unit from the SSID drop down and click Save. When that is done, go back into the Wi-Fi networks on your device and forget the AV-XXXX network so it does not try to auto connect to it later.
- Verify the AV-30 is receiving GPS. Confirm the AV-30 has a valid GPS position before moving on. The quickest check is the display itself — if it is showing GPS TRK, the AV-30 has a good position from the GPS source.
- Open the traffic page. Cycle to the AV-30 traffic display. With the AV-30 receiving a good GPS position and the pingUSB receiving, targets should appear within a minute or so.
Troubleshooting
Traffic page is blank with known ADS-B traffic in the area.
- Check the scale rings first. Use the center knob to zoom out and confirm you are not just scaled in past the targets.
- Make sure the GPS source has an appropriately strong signal.
- Confirm the pingUSB has flashing lights and is receiving traffic.
- Confirm the correct filter is set on the AV-30 traffic display. We recommend the Only Own filter to ensure the best display of traffic.
- Verify you are in an area with ADS-B Out equipped aircraft or ground station coverage.
- Confirm the pingUSB has a reasonable view outside the aircraft. Mounting it deep in the panel or under metal will hurt reception.
AV-Link won't connect to the pingUSB. Confirm the pingUSB is powered and its Wi-Fi network is visible from a phone. If the AV-Link was previously paired to a different receiver, it may still be holding that network — reselect the pingUSB in the AV-Link configuration. Pairing while the device is in airplane mode is preferred.
pingUSB is showing a solid blue light. A solid blue light means the Wi-Fi chip in the unit has failed. The pingUSB will not be able to pass traffic to the AV-Link in this condition and will need to be looked at by uAvionix. Submit a support ticket at support.uavionix.com to get that started.
Limitations
- Only traffic can be displayed on the AV-30, no weather.
- pingUSB has no CO sensor, so the AV-30 CO overlay and alerting are not available in this configuration.
- Traffic on the AV-30 is advisory only and is supplemental to see-and-avoid.
- If multiple AV-Links are installed in the aircraft, no more than two may be enabled at once, and only one AV-Link connected to the pingUSB.
Still need help?
If you have worked through the above and are still not seeing traffic, please start a support ticket at support.uavionix.com and one of our technical support agents will reach out to help get it working.
