How to Update the AV-30-C Software (YouTube Video Transcript)
In the video demonstration: "How to Update AV-30-C Software Video," we demonstrate how to update the AV-30 unit. The items you need are: 1) AV-30 device, 2) 15-pin D-sub connector, and a, 3) 9-pin D-sub connector. This video demonstrates what wires you will be hooking up and to which location.
First, you will need the Sabarent cable and a Windows operating laptop. Next, you will want to address the steps below in the following order:
- The 15-pin connector will pin, pin 1 with power. Then pin 9 with ground and 8 with 15. Then, you will be plugging in the 15-pin.
- Next, Pin 8 is going to go to pin 3, pin 15 is going to go to pin 2.
- Then, on the ground wire, you will parallel that wire with one wire is going to the power supply and the other to pin 5 of the 9-pin dsub.
- Lastly, of course, make sure the power and ground do to touch each other because that could cause problems.
Now, you have the ground wire going to both the 9 ping dsub and to the power supply. Now, take the Sabarent cable out of the packaging and note that one side of this cable is a male 9-pin. We're will take this cable and plug it straight into the USB port on the AV-30 device, which allows us to power on the AV-30. Now, it is time to turn on the power supply. In this video demonstration, we have it on 12 volts.
When the AV-30 is powered on, you will see the software version you are currently operating on appear on the loading screen. Once the unit is powered on and going, we will turn on Windows laptop and navigate to uavionix.com. Then, navigate to the “support” tab, navigate to the appropriate product category (General Aviation), and then select "AV-30." You will then select the service bulletin with the most recent software update [3.2.1 is the most updated]. In the service bulletin article, you will want to select and download the AV update tool and the firmware. Once it is downloaded, you cannot open it and you will not be opening it.
Moving onto the update tool, you will click on that. You will select “more information” and then select “run it anyway.” Next, you will select COM port 8 because that's what it selected, then click “connect.” Then, the AV-30-unit screen will go black. Next, we will select “open file.” This will then prompt to bring up a downloads file and then you will select the file that you just downloaded and select “write firmware.” After this action, you will begin to see that it's going to start programming and running it. The AV-30 screen will remain black, and it will remain that way until the update has been completed.
Once it has finalized and updated, the unit will come back on. The screen will go from black back to the uAvionix logo and load. It will then show the newest software version, demonstrating that the software download and update process has been successful. For a visual representation of this process, select and watch the video listed above this article.

Tech Tip Tuesday: How to Place the AV-30 into Bootloader Mode (YouTube Video Transcript)
If the software update has issues going to a "black screen" you can place the AV-30 manually into "Bootloader" mode.
In this demonstration video, instructions are provided on how to place the AV-30 into bootloader mode. This could be needed if for some reason during the software update, you lose power and the unit does not come back on. Then you're left with just a black screen and no way to do the update.
uAvionix has made a way to be able to make the unit ready to receive the update. Please follow the instructions below:
- Remove power from the unit.
- Once the power is removed, press and hold the left and the right button simultaneously, apply power, and count to 10 seconds.
- Once you have counted to 10 seconds, release the buttons. The screen will remain black, but will be ready to update.
- Connect to the unit again, whether through the AV-Link or through the serial connection, then push the software again, as you normally would.
- You have successfully placed the device into bootloader mode. Once the software update has been added and pushed through, the unit will come back as normal, and you may now confirm the new software on this unit.
