Where Should the AV-Link Be Installed?
The correct AV-Link installation location depends on whether the aircraft has an AV-HSI installed. This is an important change from earlier AV-30 installations.
AV-30 Installation WITHOUT an AV-HSI
For a standalone AV-30 installation, the AV-Link connects directly to the back of the AV-30.
In this configuration, the AV-Link communicates only with the AV-30 to which it is connected. If the aircraft has multiple AV-30 displays without an AV-HSI, the AV-Link must be moved between displays—or a separate AV-Link must be used—to update each unit.
AV-30 Installation WITH an AV-HSI
When an AV-HSI is installed, the AV-Link should not be connected directly to an AV-30. Instead, it connects to the AV-HSI and is remotely mounted behind the instrument panel.
The AV-HSI acts as the communication hub for the connected AV-30 displays. One AV-Link connected to the AV-HSI can support up to four AV-30 units, provided each AV-30 is running software version 3.0.1 or later.
Software updates are still performed one AV-30 at a time through the AV-Link web interface, but the AV-Link no longer needs to be physically moved between displays.
| Aircraft configuration | AV-Link location |
|---|---|
| AV-30 without AV-HSI | Connected directly to the back of the AV-30 |
| AV-30 with AV-HSI | Connected to the AV-HSI and mounted behind the panel |
Why Did the Location Change?
Before the introduction of the AV-HSI, the AV-Link communicated directly with a single AV-30. The AV-HSI creates a shared connection between multiple AV-30 displays, allowing one centrally installed AV-Link to communicate with each connected unit.
The simplest rule to remember is:
No AV-HSI: connect the AV-Link to the AV-30.
AV-HSI installed: connect the AV-Link to the AV-HSI.
Always follow the current AV-30 and AV-HSI installation manuals for wiring, configuration, mounting, and software requirements. Additional guidance is available in the official AV-Link PMA FAQs and AV-HSI PMA FAQs.
