The AV-30-E Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS) supports several optional accessories that expand its functionality, ranging from enhanced navigation and autopilot control to traffic display and improved heading accuracy. These accessories require specific configurations and software versions to operate properly.
AV-Mag External Magnetometer (P/N UAV-1006518-001)
The AV-Mag is a 3-Axis Electronic Compass designed to precisely measure the Earth's magnetic field.
- Function: It aids the AV-30-E's gyroscopic heading measurement, significantly improving long-term accuracy of the directional indication.
- Requirement: It is supported in AV-30-E software version 2.3.9 or later and requires configuration and calibration before use. It is explicitly required when utilizing the AV-HSI for IFR navigation due to the need for precise heading data.
- Power/Interconnect: It receives power from and transmits data to the AV-30-E via an RS-232 serial interface. It can run off the AV-30-E's internal battery during a power loss, continuing to provide aided heading data.
AV-Link Integrated Wi-Fi Bridge (P/N UAV-1004414-001)
The AV-Link is a wireless bridge that extends the functionality of the AV-30-E by facilitating communication with Wi-Fi capable devices.
- Functions:
- Live ADS-B Traffic Display: When paired with a supported Wi-Fi capable ADS-B receiver (like Sentry or GDL90 receivers), the AV-30-E can display real-time traffic information on a separate Multi-Function Display (MFD) page. This traffic data is for advisory use only and is supplemental.
- Carbon Monoxide (CO) Monitoring and Alerting: If connected to an AV-Link, and subsequently to a Sentry ADS-B receiver equipped with a CO sensor, the AV-30-E can display CO status as an overlay and provide CO alerts.
- Wireless Firmware Updates: The AV-Link enables the wireless update of AV-30-E firmware via an embedded web page accessible through a PC or mobile device.
- ForeFlight Integration: The AV-Link will be the bridge between ForeFlight and the AV-30 to provide VFR navigational data from ForeFlight to the AV-30. The AV-30 will then send the AHRS data to ForeFlight. (Software update 3.2.0 required)
- Limitation: The AV-Link is not powered by the AV-30-E internal battery, meaning MFD traffic data and related Wi-Fi connectivity functions are unavailable during a power loss. No more than two AV-Link modules may be enabled simultaneously in the aircraft.
AV-HSI Horizontal Situation Indicator (P/N UAV-1007846-001)
The AV-HSI is an accessory designed to enable primary navigation indication on connected AV-30-E units.
- Function: It displays course and glideslope guidance from connected IFR-capable GPS navigators (via ARINC 429) or VHF navigators (VOR/ILS, via ARINC 429 or serial protocols) to support instrument approaches and enroute guidance
- Hub Capabilities: The AV-HSI acts as a serial hub, connecting multiple AV-30-E units and synchronizing data such as heading bug, Barometric setting, OAT, and autopilot modes across them. If an AV-Link is attached directly to the AV-HSI, it forwards traffic and carbon monoxide alerts to all connected AV-30-Es.
- Autopilot integration: Digital Autopilots like the Trio and Aerocruze (Trutrak) use the AV-HSI to forward ARINC 429 information to the AV-30s.
- Requirement: The AV-Mag is required when utilizing the AV-HSI due to the precise nature of IFR navigation.
AV-APA Analog Port Adapter (P/N UAV-1007840-001)
The AV-APA is an optional analog port adapter used to provide autopilot control inputs.
- Function: It enables direction control input to specific S-TEC autopilots (System 20, 30, 40, 50, 55/55X, 60-1/60-2/65) by emulating the analog heading output of the Bendix King KI-525A HSI.
- Modes: It supports six autopilot control modes, including heading bug (HDG BUG), track bug (TRK BUG), and GPS steering (GPSS), the latter requiring the optional Advanced Autopilot Unlock.
- Requirement: The AV-Mag is required for the most accurate heading information necessary for autopilot heading hold mode
- Limitation: The AV-APA is not powered by the AV-30-E internal battery, so analog autopilot operations are unavailable during a power loss. It does not control altitude for S-TEC autopilots.
Transponder Control (e.g., tailBeaconX family)
The AV-30-E can serve as the control interface for select uAvionix transponders like the BeaconX family
- Function: It provides the transponder with pressure altitude, mode (STBY, ON, ALT), squawk code, and IDENT information, and displays status and annunciations from the transponder.
- Configuration: A newly installed transponder can be configured using the "BEACONX CFG" option in the AV-30-E installation menu.
- Testing: GTM (Ground Test Mode) can be enabled on the AV-30.
- GPS Data: The transponder (e.g., tailBeaconX) can optionally provide GPS track and ground speed data back to the AV-30-E for display.
- Limitation: The transponder is not powered by the AV-30-E internal battery, so transponder operations cease during a power loss.
GPS Navigator (External)
The AV-30-E connects directly to external GPS units or panel-mounted navigators via an RS-232 serial input.
- Function: This connection allows the display of situational awareness information such as ground speed, track, distance to destination, cross-track, and flight plan data in textual or graphical formats.
- Limitation: GPS data received directly from these aviation or NMEA serial protocols is for VFR operations only and does not provide IFR compliant lateral or vertical guidance.
