Tech Tip Tuesday: AV-30 Standard Rate of Turn (Video Transcript)
Turn Coordinator:
- Turn Rate - No OAT Probe required, available on any unit with the latest software
- Bank Angle - Requires OAT probe for function.
In this demonstration video, we provide instructions that show the user how to set up and use the Rate of Turn feature on the AV-30. First, you're going to want to enter the Setup menu by pressing the left button 2X. Upon entering the Setup menu, you will use the center (PUSH-SET) knob to rotate to the right until you see “TURN COORD,” then press the center knob 1X. Once you have pressed the center knob, the setting is on, and the font color will change from teal/blue to magenta.
Next, you will use the center knob again, to rotate right until you come upon “Turn Rate” and you will press the center knob 1X. This will turn the font color from magenta, back teal/blue. You will then press the left button 1X to select “DONE.”
In the video, you will see a demonstration of turning to the left, to see this feature in action. You will see that it starts to paint a line and you'll want to get to a 30-degree mark—which means that you'll be in a standard rate turn.
Additionally, this doesn't use the outside air temperature probe, so this feature is available on any unit with the latest software. If you do have an outside air temperature probe, you can go back into the Setup menu, by pressing the left button 2X and then turning the center knob to the right until you reach “TURN COORD.”
Next, you will press the center knob 1X and then rotate the center knob to the right until you see “BANK ANGLE.” Then press the left button 1X to select “DONE.” In the video demonstration, you can see that we now have a little circle with a line through it, and that is our indication of our standard rate angle that we would turn to.
Following, you will go ahead and make a rate turn to the left or the right. In the demonstration vide, you will want to place the triangle on the circle on the screen. This will be your standard rate turn. This requires the outside temperature probe, to calculate true airspeed. With true airspeed, you will be more exact with the angle that you need for a standard rate turn.
By following these instructions, you will be able to set up and interpret the rate of turn and bank angle indications on the AV-30.
